Little was known about Cézanne in England at the start of the 20th century. The role played by the entrepreneur, artist, critic and curator Roger Fry is a significant one, and, in order to bring Cézanne into public focus, he embroiled Leonard and Virginia Woolf, among others, in his cause. Fry’s biographer, Frances Spalding, looks at the part he played in bringing the artist to prominence.
